Playing in the surf at the 42 mile crossing, Coorong South Australia.

Cautionary Note:

The surf at the 42 mile crossing is not recommended for swimming. Care should be taken when in the sea as there can be strong under-tow currents.

Suggested Activities:

There is an abundance of things to do in the Coorong & Lakes District in the Upper South East of South Australia.

Locally, you can enjoy a bush walk, hike or 4WD drive in the adjacent Coorong National Park and nearby Conservation Parks.

Take a walk through a former Aboriginal Reserve, past ruins of old graves near a huge Mulberry tree (walking distance from Gemini Downs Coorong Holiday Centre).
The Lakes Nature Trail (from Salt Creek).
42 Mile Crossing is a 1.3 km 4WD track that leads over steep sand dunes to the spectacular southern ocean beach. If you wish you can walk a scenic trail (1 hour return) to the beach. Take a hat, water and sunscreen.
Surf Fishing. There is 4WD access to the beach at Tea Tree, 42 Mile, 32 Mile and 28 Mile Crossings.
Chinamans Well historic site – 'Journey to Gold' walk.
Visit the Pelican Observatory at Jacks point, 3 km north of Policeman's point. Enjoy a short walk to a viewing shelter that looks over to a small cluster of islands where pelicans and terns have established permanent breeding colonies.
The Salt Creek Primary School has the Out Look Inn which aims to provide a wider understanding of the unique Coorong environment. A walk through it can be arranged by phoning the school on 08 85757071.

Survival Skills. Bird Watching. Orienteering. Fishing. Campfire Cooking (April – October). Sailing. Windsurfing and Canoeing. (supply own equipment).

Tours:

Watervalley Wetlands - Enjoy the serenity and tranquillity of this expansive piece of land whilst appreciating the variety of wildlife. Self Drive or Tag Tours are available. All tracks are 4WD.

Eating Out:

All Cabins and Units are self contained with kitchen facilities. If you wish to eat out, why not try our locally renowned Coorong Mullet at a number of local eateries.

The Coorong Hotel, pub and bottle shop; 7 km north of Gemini Downs.
The Coorong Roadhouse, 3.5 km south of Gemini Downs sells eat in or takeaway meals, fuel, fishing tackle and bait.
The Pelican Roadhouse at Policeman’s Point has a BYO License and offers eat in or take away meals.

Study Themes:

History – Chinese Wells, Oil Wells, Aboriginal Middens, Coorong Murders and massacres of the 19th century. Agriculture. Geology. Biology. Art. Environmental Studies.

Geology – The Coorong is made up of salt lagoons adjacent to sand dunes next to the Southern Ocean, about 100 km long and is an area of word-wide biological significance. It is an important environmental area for native animals, pelican breeding and migratory birds.
